Welcome to our Counselor Education webpage and thank you for your interest in our programs. I joined the department in 1981 when we were then Trenton State College. Over the years there have been many changes, including new faculty members, new programs and now a new building. What has not changed, though, is a climate created by the faculty which embraces diversity, encourages student engagement, and respects each person as an individual. I feel it is an honor to work at The College of New Jersey and am grateful that each year I have the opportunity to work with bright, hard working and dedicated students from many different backgrounds.
Teaching is my passion and I particularly enjoy helping students cultivate their personal strengths and learn new counseling skills. I view the time students spend with us as a journey in which my role is to guide students in becoming authentic, reflective counselors who are grounded in sound theoretical principles and attuned to the unique needs of each client and family. I regularly teach our Career Counseling and Counseling Theory and Techniques courses and endeavor to engage students in experiential learning experiences that make course material personally and clinically relevant. Each year I also join with a small group of students who are embarking on their first clinical course and mentor them through the process of starting as new and anxious practicum students to becoming effective and confident counseling interns.
My scholarly interests are primarily in the areas of career counseling for diverse populations, curriculum strategies in counselor education and clinical supervision. I enjoy collaborating on projects with my faculty colleagues and also encourage students in their writing and research. I like to mentor students in their scholarly efforts and am proud of the many students who have published work based on assignments and projects completed in my courses.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about our programs. Best wishes to you as you pursue your personal and professional goals in becoming a professional counselor.
