Students are attracted to the counseling programs at TCNJ because:
- The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program, the Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling and Therapy Program, and the School Counseling Program at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) are nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
- TCNJ was the first institution of higher education in New Jersey and the Delaware Valley region to obtain CACREP accreditation. TCNJ has also maintained its accreditation longer than any other school in the area.
- The full-time faculty all hold doctoral degrees, possess many certifications and licenses, and teach the majority of the courses in the program.
- The faculty publish articles in professional journals and present their work at professional conferences. The faculty have guided dozens of students to publish and present their work as well.
- Small classes provide personalized instruction.
- The clinical sequence features intense and close supervision. During their first semester of field work students are assigned to a faculty member for weekly individual supervision in addition to attending a weekly faculty-led group supervision session.
- As a CACREP-approved program, the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) permits our students to take this national certification exam at TCNJ during their last semester of enrollment. Students who successfully pass this exam are waived of the requirement of needing 2 years of post-master’s experience to obtain the NBCC certification.
- The NBCC exam is required for counselor licensure in most states, including New Jersey. Typically, 98% of our students pass the NBCC exam on their first attempt.
- The program offers both evening and day time classes to accommodate the needs of both part-time and full-time students.
- An active campus chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society in counseling, sponsors an annual honor society awards dinner and a scholarship for a graduate student in the program.
